Hi all, i am a new member. I started with about 16 various types in my tank and now have currently 30 full size and heaps of babies ( tank size 320 litres downstairs). I also have another tank (220 litres upstairs) with 22 electric yellows which i breed successfully. I have the water temp at around 28 degress constant, as i was told with warmer water you get more males. Can anyone tell me how to slow down the breeding cycle in my tank as i am getting far to many fish? What started to be 1 tank is now 5 various size tanks as i have had so many breed. Cheers markryan

that's celsius hahaha. he's in australia.

I dunno about the temp and males in cichlids, i know its relative to crocodiles and some turtles, but u could turn temp down to like 26. The warmer the water the more it stimulates the fishs breeding behavior. move rocks around to disturb the domiant males places this will help slow down the breeding too.

You can always post the extra fish on craigslist.com, can make a few bucks for supplies or just give em to a good home. some pet stores will take them in and offer you store credit

Hey markryan, welcome to ACF!! wave.gif

Have heard the theory of getting more males at higher temperatures. Never experimented with this myself, although had intentions a few times. What have your results shown?

As for slowing down breeding, that'll be tough to do. Seems once they get going, after that it's like clockwork. How are you getting the fry?, stripping, putting holding females in a separate tank, etc? If you let the females spit in the main tank, the number of fry will usually be drastically reduced.
