Well, here's my first go at Vics. Unfortunately, the tank I had planned to put them in until I built a cheap stand ended up contaminated with something. I had to hurry to set up a 55g. No problems now though, and two of the 12 are already showing some nice male coloring at 1". Very cool. I'll have to get a camera and post some pics with updates.

Sweet! I saw a pick of the 'Ruti Island' variant over on NYcichlids.com and all I can say is I want some too!
crazyauratus

Very very cool. Better colors even 24 hours later! Maybe it's the food..... grin

Congrats!!Clap I cant wait to see them. I love vics but they are such a limited commodity where I live!!!

The more I see of them, the better!
Orbital
Sweet, they are a nice Vic! Share some pics once they get some size to them.
HornPlayer54
I sure will!

good show "hornplayer" i have some neyeri and i love those mean, nasty little buggers. they breed like rabbits and the males color up at an inch. and their mean and nasty...didnt i say that already. but they are, take care with tank mates...mate. labs and such seem to be the only thing that can keep up with them. any thing else just gets pushed into the corner and abused. but they are some cool little fish. good luck and congrats.

Mongo-

Thanks for the kind words. I bought 12 at ~1-1.5". I have them on their own in a 55g. Since you have some experience, do you think I would even need some other tankmates? I was thinking that I would just leave it at this. I guess maybe some petricolas or labs.... But only maybe. I'd almost rather just have a species tank with these. Any thoughts?
mongo
i would, they are just so...(sorry "les" ) DAMN aggressive. the males will just about kill the females trying to breed. and they will start breeding very soon. mine have bred at one inch in their growout tanks. that is no joke. i keep labs in their tank just lessen the aggression. thats my two cents worth.
mongo
HornPlayer54
Well, I can get some very nice 1-1.5" labs very easily around here. Maybe I will! Thanks for the info. I'll get pics, etc. up soon!
mongo
this is a inch long male in my fry tank right now.

and heres a bad pic of daddy.

so you can see their great looking fish, just mean as "HECK".

Very nice! My varient has red all through the dorsal fin. Not blue like yours. Very nice! I got them because of the Koenings picture in the July Cichlid News mag.

Very excited!
mongo

Nice pictures ! A few years ago the Vics were around a lot more, I wonder if it was lack of interest or something else that made them basically fall out of sight.
crazyauratus
Nice shots!! thumbs up

pseudofreak" i think that the reason that vics arent around as much, is because they are akin to satan incarnate. its like having a bunch of little mike tysons fighting for spyrolina flake in your tank. and i think that they were like any new cichlids that hit the hobby, very expensive. but i will give those little buggers their due, they are very colorful and breed like rabbits. and i would like to get some more eventually. the species that i really like right now is haplochromis polli "yellow". heres a link to Armkes with a good pic.
haplochromis polli "yellow""
any way, its like any thing else, it goes in cycles. as more vics hit the hobby they will once again be popular.

Thanks AF. I'm really enjoying them os far. I have some Texas Holey Rock on the way for their tank and I hope to add some rock kribs (possibly) in the not too far off future.

Thanks again!
